Online shopping and parcels in Singapore: a platform guide
The prettiest discount does not always win. Not every platform protects a purchase the same way, and it pays to know which covers what.
Updated Sep 24, 2026
Not every online shopping platform protects a purchase the same way in Singapore. Amazon, Lazada and Shopee keep payment, tracking and disputes in one place; TikTok Shop blends content with sales; Carousell and Facebook Marketplace rely much more on how you verify the seller and complete the deal yourself.
How safe are the platforms
In its 2026 safety assessment, Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs rated Amazon, Lazada, Shopee and TikTok Shop 4 out of 4 stars; Carousell 2 out of 4; and Facebook Marketplace 1 out of 4. The practical takeaway: a higher rating means safer dispute handling. Not scam-proof. The fewer stars a platform has, the more care you need to put into every purchase yourself.
Official store vs. open marketplace
On Lazada and Shopee, always distinguish the brand's official store from the open marketplace, where any third party can sell. Check the account's age, sales volume, recent ratings and (most useful of all) reviews with real photos, not just the average star rating.
Buying on Carousell or Facebook Marketplace
Here the responsibility falls almost entirely on you. Check the seller's account age, past ratings, and whether the item photos are their own (not copied from the internet). For electronics, fully test the device (battery, cameras, screen, ports) before releasing payment, and do it in person if you can.
Never leave the platform
If the platform offers buyer protection, do not move payment or conversation outside it. Treat external links, OTP requests, and payments to third-party accounts in exchange for a "discount" as warning signs.
Your rights if something arrives wrong
Singapore's Lemon Law gives you the right to repair, replacement, a price reduction or a refund when a product does not match what was advertised. It does not apply the same way to services or private consumer-to-consumer sales. There, inspecting before paying is your only real protection.
Receiving the parcel correctly
Details that prevent lost orders
- Give your full address: block, floor, unit, the six-digit postal code and the condo's name.
- In areas with a guardhouse, include clear access instructions for the rider.
- If you will not be home, use a Pick Network locker or a SingPost POPStation. Both run 24/7 and open with a PIN or QR code.
Watch out for parcel scams
Treat any SMS asking for a small payment to "release" or "reschedule" a parcel as suspicious. Always check a shipment's status from the platform's official app, and if something looks off, report it on ScamShield or call 1799.
