Sport and gyms in Singapore: staying active in the heat
Heat and humidity change how you exercise in Singapore. What it costs, where to train and how to adapt to the climate.
Updated Sep 24, 2026
Exercising outdoors at midday in Singapore is a real challenge because of the constant heat and humidity. Most people who train regularly adjust their schedule and make use of the public options, which are surprisingly accessible.
ActiveSG: the cheap public option
The public gym and pool network ActiveSG has locations across the island. Use the facility finder to see which one is nearest. Rates change depending on user type (citizen, permanent resident or standard rate) and time slot; check current prices on the site before going, do not assume fixed figures.
Commercial gyms
Chains like Anytime Fitness, Pure Fitness or Virgin Active offer more comfort (strong aircon, classes, 24/7 access in some cases) in exchange for monthly fees quite a bit higher than ActiveSG. Worth comparing before signing an annual contract.
Booking courts with MyActiveSG+
Basketball, badminton, tennis and football courts are almost always booked through the MyActiveSG+ app, at prices generally lower than private facilities. Worth booking a few days ahead, especially on weekends.
How to train outdoors without the heat winning
- Train before 8am or after 6pm: Singapore's midday sun shows no mercy, even under clouds.
- Hydrate more than you would in Mexico: humidity makes you sweat more than it feels like.
- Check the UV index and rain radar on the myENV app before heading out to run or cycle.
- If you train on a park connector or trail, there are public water points at several spots. You do not always need to carry much water.
The middle-ground option: swimming
ActiveSG public pools are one of the cheapest ways to get cardio in without as much direct heat exposure. There are several across the island. Check rates and hours on ActiveSG before going.
